Course Description

Cranes in ConstructionThis course covers the requirements for operation of cranes in the construction industry. Using OSHA’s Cranes and Derricks Standard as a guide, this course covers hazards associated with crane assembly and disassembly, maintenance and inspection requirements, and employee qualifications.

Students will participate in workshops to reinforce concepts of safe crane operation. Upon course completion students will have the ability to identify the types of cranes and their components and attachments, determine safe operating conditions, and recognize common violations of OSHA Standards.

Individuals responsible for overseeing safety in industries such as: Construction, Maritime and General Industry.

  1. Describe hazards related to construction crane activities
  2. Recognize crane types (equipment) included in the OSHA standard
  3. Recognize crane types (equipment) excluded from the OSHA standard
  4. Describe various components of (included) types of cranes including their attachments
  5. Describe the lifting principles of construction cranes
  6. Summarize requirements of Subpart CC

 Registration Eligibility

Students who wish to participate in OSHA–numbered courses in the online synchronous video conferencing format must have a valid physical address in Region 9 (CA, NV, HI, AZ, Guam, and American Samoa), or obtain permission from their local OTIEC to attend a class outside their home region.

Other CSUDH OTIEC courses can be taken by anyone (no residency required).

  • Access to computer or laptop with built-in camera – one student per device
  • OSHA 510, 511, 500 and 501 Students only:
    Additional stand-alone webcam or secondary device (phone)
  • Built-in or external speakers/headset and microphone
